The Shamrock and the Swastika
(Documentaries)
The story is a controversial examination of the nature and extent of the IRA’s links with the NAZI’s during World War II, a liaison characterized by misunderstanding, mistrust and monumental bungling, doomed to end in tragedy.

While the NAZI’s wanted world domination, the IRA hoped to achieve a 32 republic in Ireland. In a startling display of naivety they thought they could ride on the back of the Nazi beast without being swallowed up. At the beginning of the 1930’s the IRA was a private army of 30,000 members. By the end of World War Two they had effectively ceased to exist as a body. Their ally, Germany, was utterly destroyed.

The story involves submarine landings, bombings, manhunts and jailbreaks, parachute drops, arrests, invasion plans, coup d’etats and inevitably death and destruction. Lavish archives, including a previously unheard recording of the first Nazi agent, Oscar Pfaus, recounting his early dealings with the IRA, and newly unearthed facts, make this spy thriller one to watch.

The Shamrock and the Swastika aired on TG4 in January to critical acclaim and has recently been sold to SBS Australia.
